When I read Anne Lamott’s experiences with first drafts and writing, I kept thinking about my own experience with art and design. While I have written many essays and drafts for school assignments, the idea of reworking something multiple times has never felt as complementary and fulfilling as Lamott writing career as my own artwork. For every piece of art I make, I have to start with concept designs and initial sketches. Each drawing, painting and design begins with simple shapes that help form figures and scenes, like characters and buildings.
