It occurs when the brain smashes against the skull and bruises, which can alter the mental state. For about two to four weeks, the person with a concussion feels dizzy and is unable to concentrate. Most people think of a concussion as a short term situation, but years later problems occur too. The two main areas that concussions affect in the long term are emotional and physical abilities. Scientists tested how many concussions occurred in a year and it was terrifying: “During the 2010 season, about 160 NFL players suffered concussions, which doctors have [linked to depression, early onset of Alzheimer 's and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy.]” (Impact zone). Each concussion, the players get closer and closer to developing these diseases inside the brain. The amount of concussions that athletes obtain is growing each year. One hundred and sixty concussions and more counting because most players just want to keep playing the game no matter the injuries that they have so they keep their concussion secret. An example of this is when Chris Borland, a rookie in the NFL, played several games with a concussion. Another study was conducted and it showed the amount of former players who had some sort of disease from concussions. There are many diseases that are caused by multiple hits to the head that include, Dementia and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. Dementia is a name for a lot of other diseases such as Alzheimer 's. Alzheimer 's mostly affects the memory of a human because cells lose control of communication in the part of the brain called the hippocampus. Many players that used to play professional sports now have signs of Alzheimer’s because of the concussions and hits to the head they received. (“Dementia:Signs, Symptoms”). Another disease that sports players can get is CTE also know as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. This disease is known among boxers in the late 1900’s as Dementia Pugilistica, but it is also common in football. In a study of deceased NFL players, 76 out of 79 players had signs of CTE. (“Going Gentle Into That Good Night”). Only three players were lucky enough to not have CTE which shows the horrible effects of concussions later in life. Many players who played contact sports have this disease and more are getting it earlier because people are starting to play sports at a young age. Another study was conducted and it determined how many more people die from diseases like these because of playing sports.
