As a client care worker, I assist clients with their individual needs by carrying out a care plan mandated by Developmental Services Ontario which was specifically designed for mental health support. This includes but is not limited to personal care, medical assistance, support and implementing programs to benefit the individual’s specific needs. In this position, working with high-risk individuals I often utilized my training in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention. By learning to stay calm, manage my own responses and handle challenging questions in high stress situations I have gained ample experience in de-escalating situations to keep all parties involved safe.

This position provided me with ample experience and knowledge of working with children with autism spectrum disorder and developmental delays. I work with children to suit their individual needs, to help develop social skills, express their feelings, and encourage positive social interaction. I believe Social Workers are imperative for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder because, Social Workers can engage in counselling with children, deeply help them to understand and communicate their feelings while further connecting them with community resources. A Social Worker can help children and their families cope with the daily challenges individuals face while making a large difference and improving individuals’ lives.
