I honestly think when Titon was putting this whole book together, we wanted us to take away more information about world music as much as we could, and he probably figured that the only way we would truly understand is if it was relatable. I don’t think the choice to go with South America over Central America was easy for him or the rest of the authors. Both countries have such rich history with very diverse and unique cultures, but when it comes down to the end, all that matters is which one had a better connection with the United States. Although Cuba has influenced a lot of different genres and music styles, South American countries have been influenced by the United States and therefore has a higher importance value to Americans over Cuba. Another reason why could be because the United States and Cuba haven’t had the best relationship over the last couple of decades and there is a chance that by writing about Cuban music culture, something could be taken the wrong way and have a negative effect on the building of a better relationship between these two
