Cultural Diversity is a topic every nurse must understand. Every culture has a different perspective on life and a person’s characteristics are largely comprised of his/her cultural values. Being aware of different cultural beliefs and perceptions on life is a key component in nursing as it enables nurses to help their clients more efficiently. Death and dying is a topic that needs to be understood, there are so many different ways of perceiving this topic, and in Algerian culture, it is looked at positively when it comes to the death and dying aspect. There are many customs and traditions that are expressed and practiced in the Algerian culture, with respect to death and dying. In many cultures, death is perceived negatively but in this culture it is believed that this is what “we” as humans were brought to this world for. These beliefs were primarily influenced by their religious practice of reading the Quran. Algerian culture supports the reality of death, they believe in; “we belong to Allah and to Allah we return”(Assous, 2013, para.15). They believe that everyone has their time of death coming and for that very reason, the sight of excessive grief due to a death is despised because it seems as if the person is disobeying Allah’s will (Assous, 2013, para. 30). There is a high respect to death and as the same for life, the dying person plays a strong role in their death. They advocate their family members on how they would like for their funeral to go about, everything from food, to the coffin choice, choosing a place for the burial(Assous, 2013, para. 29). In this culture, it is seen as home being the most appropriate place for death, the last few hours being spent at home alive. This knowledge will keep nurses aware that not everyone perceives topics such as death and dying the same way. In some cultures death and dying is looked at negatively and some cultures look at it positively. Cultural awareness will help nurses be more culturally sensitive and it will lead to good communication with their patients. Being culturally aware leads to great conflict resolution interventions. When gaining knowledge about a specific culture, it is difficult not to stereotype everyone from that specific culture to practice the same rituals.
