Gatsby was wonderstruck when he saw Daisy’s child. To Gatsby Daisy’s child was a symbol that Tom and Daisy loved each other and Daisy’s child is the result of those five years that Tom has lost. Gatsby is just dismayed because Daisy’s child is a proof that Daisy married Tom, loved him and gave her heart to Tom during these five years. This can be seen in the chapter where Nick says “Gatsby kept looking at the child with surprise. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart, she never loved anyone except me.’’This tells that Gatsby believes that tom and daisy marriage is not real and daisy married tom because Gatsby was at war and Gatsby was poor and daisy didn’t have any affection or love for tom.She only married because she wanted money but now Gatsby has money and this is all daisy wants so the five years gap between Gatsby and Daisy didn’t change anything.

Daisy fell in love with both Tom and Gatsby. Before five years daisy was in love with Gatsby but during these five years daisy got married with tom and she fell in love with tom. She cannot accept that she never loved tom. This can be seen in the chapter where Daisy says to Gatsby that “ I did love tom once but I loved you too.’’This tells that since daisy married tom so she loved him at some point. Daisy doesn’t want to deal with the situation of choosing between Gatsby and Tom. Daisy is confused.
