November 20,2014 The Invasion of Steroids into the Schools Growing up in a country that is absolutely infatuated with sports whose athletes rake in millions of endorsements to play games and from endorsements it isn’t a big surprise many children idolize them. Athletes often turn to steroids to help them further their athletic careers in an attempt to chase athletic fame and immortality without researching the effects that these drugs may have on them. Athletes should be informed of the dangers of steroids because with their consumption comes health risks in all aspects which include physical and mental health. Experts claim that the testosterone in steroids can cause a psychological imbalance, due to increased levels of testosterone a person might experience “roid rage”. “Roid rage” is the drastic change in moods accompanied by heightened aggressiveness, this is frequently encountered by steroid users (Abuse). This period of heightened aggressiveness can lead to physical or heated altercations which have become a reoccurring problem in the world of competitive sports. Scholars state that “Increased aggression and hostility are the most evident changes observed and some patients experience is dose dependent mood disturbance”(Adis International). The authors claim that there are psychological effects from supplements as well, that include but are not limited to effects such as anxiety, tremors, paranoia and sometimes, in more severe cases, even causing a sensation of separation from reality (Millman and Ross). “Steroids lead teens to abuse other drugs as they attempt to manage steroid side effects such as sexual impotency, suppression of natural testosterone production and mood swings by taking Viagra, the fertility drug Clomid and sedatives.” (Jones and Jacobson). The prolonged use of steroids can lead to the development of a dependency on the substance which can make a person feel they must continue the consumption of steroids.
