Loneliness can come from a variety of situations and may differ from certain ages in someone's life. An example from the author was young adults main goal is to find a spouse or partner, since this is the more important thing at this point in their life. Loneliness can also differ from ones need to belong throughout the different stages of life and with different relationships in their lives. These five hypothesis compare all the variables and inference what the researcher thinks in going to happen. The study used 429 polish adults between 20 and 35 years old. Most of the participants identified as heterosexual, 21 identified as not heterosexual. There were 282 students in the study. 27 of them have a bachelor's degree, 27 who had secondary education, and 83 participants with a higher degree. 308 participants live with at least 2 people and 39 of the participants live alone. 232 participants had a romantic partner and 182 participants did not have a romantic partner. 21 participants were married. 4 participants were separated but not divorced. The first one is the need to belong scale. The participants were tested for their need to belong using a five point scale, 1 being strongly disagree and 5 being strongly agree. Another scale the study used is the fear of being single scale. It had 6 questions with a 5 point scale, 1 being not at all and 5 being completely true. The next scale they used was to measure romantic loneliness called the social and emotional scale for adults. The participants were asked a question and responded with a scale, 1 being strongly disagree to 7 being strongly agree. The last scale that was used it the satisfaction with relationship scale. It was used to measure relationship status satisfaction. It used a 4 point scale and they were asked to rate 5 questions with the scale of 0 being not at all, 1 being a little, 2 being somewhat, and 3 being to a greater extent. They also used a demographic question error to find out more information on the participants. They asked about things like age, gender, and sexuallity.
