As a therapist, the leadership skills utilized in the group consist of the following: empathy, active listening, maintain and reinforce the rules, encouragement, and being aware of ethical issues. Also, the therapist will utilize a variety of roles when conducting an adolescents’ groups. The leadership roles consist of directive leader, participative leaders, and supportive leaders. Directive leaders are “help provide psychological structure for their group members by clearly communicating expectations, keeping a schedule and agenda, providing specific guidance as group members work toward the completion of their task, and taking the lead on setting and communicating group rules and procedures. Some of the signs that are on the handout include letting others direct your life, letting others define you, self-abuse, and allowing someone to take as much as they can from you. The boundary exercise pertain to their boundaries in their family. “The questions is circle the words that best describe boundaries in the family in which you were raised?, describe the unhealthy boundaries you witnessed or experienced?, and describe health boundaries you witnessed or experienced?” (Black, 1995).
