Mid Semester Reflection A large portion of the class has been focused on diversity and inclusion. Due to my previous education in college level sociology and psychology courses, my knowledge on my social identities did not change. I have always made it my duty to understand the various social and biological concepts that society uses to define us and determine our status. Although my knowledge was not altered, the presentations by the GLBT Center did improve my communication skills in terms of addressing the GLBTQ community using the proper gender pronoun when I am unsure of an individual’s gender. Prior to the class, I associated all privilege with the benefits that come with being white; without realizing I was privileged in the educational background of my family. Through all these lectures and workshops, my knowledge of underrepresented groups has changed my understanding of NC State University. As a predominately white institution, I had seen many campaigns by NC State to increase diversity in its student body. Being an African American female, I assumed the increase in diversity needed was more African American students, not recognizing that other groups of minorities were included in the campaigns. Now knowing this, I realize NC State aims to be a welcoming institution where all students feel welcome regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation. The NC State community is not just black and white, but it is a rainbow of students. Correspondingly, NC State is making changes to accommodate all types of students: one of which being more individual occupancy bathrooms. These small changes implemented around campus make a big difference to the underrepresented minorities on campus. Ultimately, NC State is working to be become a
