The culture group that I found intriguing was the Tiwi people. They inhabit the Melville and Bathurst islands, which spans out to roughly three thousand square miles. I grew up on a farm with about six thousand acres of land used for cattle and planting crops. I always perceived my area of land to be quite extensive, but after learning about the Tiwi’s plot of land I realized how small my farm actually is. The two islands are described as being heavily forested.…
The lovely country of Tahiti is located in one of the many French Polynesian islands. On this island, people dance the beautiful art of Tahitian Ori (dance) with the sound of the Tairi Pahu (known as Tahitian drumming; meaning ‘the one heartbeat’). I have grown up with this part of the Tahitian culture and have spent many years dancing it. Through the years I have fallen in love with the culture, so I have chosen to study the history of Tahitian dance and drumming as my topic for my senior project. Through this journey I have always wanted to study the history of the art I love, and to elaborate on the basic knowledge and common errors of modern day Tahitian Ori and drumming.…
The clients for the remodeling of the existing landscape are Bach and Phuong Nguyen. With all their children having grown past the age of running amok and tearing up the lawns, they have decided that now is a good time to do so. These six daughters can be considered clients as well. A majority of them still live in the household, while the others visit quite often. As a result of this, the clients' ages range from mid-teens to the early fifties.…
Miccosukee Seminole Indian tribe Over 200 years ago, the Miccosukee tribe have been known by its characteristic way of fighting to protect their territory. First, the Spaniards, and then even worse, the Anglo-American who tried to exterminate the Miccosukee’s Indians almost two centuries ago and who eventually left them no other option than to live in a very small place in ancestral areas of the Everglades in Miami. The Indians seeking for a decent style of life had to adapt themselves to sleep in hammocks. Their houses were called “chickees” and were made of wood, plaster, thatched roofs, and perhaps raised on stilts. After all this battle and years of persecution, they started to establish their permanent home and look for a better life…
The question of such a highly recognized restaurant representing authentic Chinese food has been an ongoing issue that people still question today. When compared to native stores like Longxiang Restaurant and 100 year old traditions that have been passed on over the generations, it projects the fluidity and flexibility of food authenticity in the culinary market. This book reinforced how without knowing the history and nativity of these restaurants it is easy to be blind to the level of authenticity behind them. This is equally true for Chinese dishes. General Tso’s chicken is known as a classic Chinese dish in America and is the most famous Hunan dish in the…
Lono and Kū are two Hawaiian gods that were most often represented through feathered basketry and wooden sculptures. Lono is known as the god of agriculture, plants, rain, pigs, peace, and most often connected to the idea of genealogy; while Kū is well known as the god of war, forests, canoes, houses, and crafts. These are two opposing gods in Hawaiian culture and are dependent on each other because of their juxtaposition to one another. They complete a sort of higher balance between each other and are two of the main gods in Hawaii. This essay will explore and discuss how Lono and Kū are represented in Hawaiian art, through style, usage, and historical context.…
I was flying, high up in the atmosphere, zooming past clouds, skirting birds, and basking in the hot sun. The sky, a never-ending vast expanse of teal blue, surrounded me, as I flew somewhere. I felt like I was on top of the world. The air rushed past me creating a soft whistle in my ear, but making my body cool. I don't know why, but I was so excited and joyous.…
For Native Hawaiians, the last two centuries have been a struggle against extinction. Not long after Captain Cook sailed up in 1778, disease, poverty and political and economic exploitation began pushing their culture toward the vanishing point. One harsh milestone came in 1893, when American and European businessmen backed by United States marines overthrew the Hawaiian kingdom. Annexation by the United States quickly followed. “Hawaii has since thrived as a multiracial society, and its native language and arts have undergone a rebirth in the last generation or two” - http://ic.galegroup.com/ic/ovic/NewsDetailsPage/NewsDetailsWindow?disableHighlighting=false&displayGroupName=News&currPage=&scanId=&query=&prodId=OVIC&search_within_results=&p=OVIC&mode=view&catId=&limiter=&display-query=&displayGroups=&contentModules=&action=e&sortBy=&documentId=GALE%7CA146715697&windowstate=normal&activityType=&failOverType=&commentary=&source=Bookmark&u=isb&jsid=6b5aa6df167d8497aa62946e0f677df7…

Tourism as Advertised in Hawaii For this paper, I choose to focus on Hawaii. Hawaii is a state composed of the islands of Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau, and Kahoolawe. I choose Hawaii due to its portrayal in popular culture as a modern paradise, and wanted to see how the reality measured up to my perceptions. I will begin by discussing tourism as advertised.…
Though Chuck was stranded on the island alone, from a sociologist’s viewpoint, in the movie Castaway, he demonstrated many norms, values and culture. Culture are the beliefs and customs of a society or group. In this movie, culture was demonstrated when Chuck found Albert, a fellow passenger on the plane dead, Chuck still followed the culture that he was taught, as he conducted a funeral. Chuck buried Albert’s body and put a picture of his family that he found in Albert’s wallet to make sure that he at least rests in peace. Similarly, Kelly, Chuck’s fiancé had a funeral for Chuck, even though she did not have his body.…
