If I worked with client who showed interest in skiing, but was turned away from trying due to their balancing issue, I would use this model as a guiding a point. It would be my job in facilitating self-determination and intrinsic motivation for the client. To have the client become self-determined that they can indeed ski down that hill even with their disability I will need to provide affirmation with encouragement and support. However, the client must first understand their strengths, limitations and accommodations needed to fully engage themselves to achieve their goal and objective. In other words, communication is key. One way for the client to feel comfortable in trying an activity like skiing is to communicate preferences. As the therapist, I would show my client different ways to strengthen their balance with different skiing equipment/ accommodations. Having the client express their own preference or opinion creates a better chance to achieve the goal of improving balance with something enjoyable. Intrinsic motivation will start to grow when the client feels determined to do something. To guide this motivation, I will need to emphasize inherent rewards, and provide reinforcement within their chosen environment of a ski slope.
