Gender and Work
Durkheim Application: When a person thinks of how Durkheim would apply his theory to the complications of gender and work, one must think of collective conscience. Collective conscience is defined as a “shared set of beliefs, ideas and morals that guides and bring together social groups” (119). Gender being considered a component of social groups. A society with in mechanical solidarity is categorized to have a high sense of collective conscience; which has a shared principles and ideas of the two gender and work. Social stratification is built by three classifications, which are class, power and, status. Class under the terms of Weber in the text is the ability to buy or sell goods and services that will bring satisfaction and increase your life chances” (194). Class categorizes from what they can buy and how productivity and quality. Power is defined as those of a status and party whom have control. Then status is based on background and lifestyle by kinship or inheritance. When we look at how those of status and how they work such as the government, we see that there are some laws made for the benefit of the means end calculation. One of the complications that I find to his theory is that it’s getting harder to exploit as more women rights movements are made such as stated in the paper before like the WGEA agency. Agencies like the WGEA help women to gain the knowledge and expose capitalist and let women progress into their positions. I believe that the application of the concept authority is a strength in Weber’s theory. It shows how the authority is manipulative and whether it’s legitimate, which are the people look up to and feed us or provide a certain service that will affect how we will take on the specific traditions of gender roles. This kind of explains why some people might want to be a stay at home mom because there mother did a great job at it so they are influenced that they can do it with no choice. But then again Weber’s theory is more of an organizational view that ruins of how might an individual go about tradition and human intent. Though it has some good explanation on the development of goals for the individual, the theory lacks the conception of the ideal type of
