For example, people who immigrate can help develop their home country’s economy by sending money back to their families. This money is called remittances, which totaled to $429 billion in 2016 (UN 2017). Remittances are a way that poverty in LDCs can decrease, especially if they send money back to poorer families (Taylor 2006). The United Nation’s (UN) 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development aims to lower the cost of sending remittances so that migrants will send more (UN 2017). This project involves trainings on topics such as visas and human trafficking, workshops, and visits to other countries to teach policy makers how other nations handle migration practices (IOM 2015). As Laura Thompson, Deputy Director General of the IOM said, “effective [migration] policies do not depend on how many people enter or are returned in the short term, but on their prospect of achieving real and durable change back in their countries of origin” (IOM 2017).
