Mrs. Pontellier and Robert were talking about their early childhoods and Robert mentioned his desire to eventually go to Mexico. Shortly after this conversation, Mr. Pontellier arrived back from Klein's hotel and he was upset that Edna had not listened to his conversations and that he believed that their son Raoul had a fever that she had not detected. Edna went onto the porch and had a good cry and had realized that her husband would once again be going to New Orleans on business. While he was away on business, he made sure to send a gift bag to his family filled with fruits, bonbons, and delicious syrups. After marrying her husband who was a Creole, Edna was thrown into the presence of other mothers including Adele Ratignolle in which she was taken away by her beauty and overall the absence of prudery and the freedom of expression which Creole's possessed. Robert accompanied Mrs. Pontellier and even convinced her to go bathing with him. Since her time at the Grand Isle, Edna had began to loosen her reserve and embrace her graceful severity of poise and movement which made her different from every other woman. Mrs. Pontellier had met up with Adele and they were talking about old childhood memories including running through fields in Kentucky.
