Through social media, everything in our daily life becomes transparent. You could know somebody’s personal life by checking their social media and there’s no need for you to be close friends with them. People used to email, write letters or even call their friends in order to talk to them. Nowadays, you only need to click a few buttons on your phone and you could talk to your friends and send greetings to them. Us as a society use social media to show our personal life through posting photos or making comments. Individuals do this to show their private self on social media because they want to share their daily life. This is because individuals want to make more connections with the world. According to Peter Singer in “Visible Man: Ethics in a World Without Secrets”, “ Half a billion are now on Facebook suggests that people believe the benefits of connecting with others, sharing information, networking, self-promoting, filtering and bragging outweigh of privacy that accompany such behavior.” (Singer 427) The use of social media makes privacy harder to define and people’s public self on social media becomes their private self. Our private self used to be our personal life that we spend with our close friends. Our public self is how we are when we are at work, school or public places. Nowadays since their definition is evolving, we post things on social media that used to be defined as our private self. At the start of the millennium there was no social media at all and people’s social circle was not as big as now. However, the times have changed.
