Elizabeth Vige LeBruns Portrait of Marie-Antoinette en chemise or in a Muslin Dress, 1783, and her Portrait of Marie-Antoinette with her children, 1785-87 In 1783, Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun painted one of the most famous portraits of marie-antoinette. In the painting Marie wore a gown in a style which was famously known as Gaulle. This style encompassed a white muslin dress which was loosely tied over her body and it had a sash on the waist. Marie also in that picture wore a wide-brimmed, hat which had a straw hat and she held a rose on her hand. The simplicity of the dress was a complete contrast of the royal portraiture (Caroline). It created an economic threat to the French since the garment was imported from England. The French silk industry was facing a lot of losses during that period when the chemise a la reine was caught in a portrait. This represented a rebellion of the queen against the political and gender roles. She represented herself as an independent woman because she removed her traditional signifier and took a new role. This image represented the most typical portraits of the grand siccle in the French court. In his period, Charles le brun created a new genre of painting as an artist which he named the state portrait. This image is an example of a state portrait which showed how the artist was endowned with artistic skills. The artists of this period painted without using any particular setting or apparatus but this image brought the beauty which was highly desirable for a great artist of this age. Largilliere depicts how le brun was surrounded by objects which symbolized his achievement as a great painter at that age. Although the painting shows actual appurtenances which are found in a normal studio, there was more in to the image than the apparatus which were used to bring the bigger picture. It showed the classical casts which were based on his style as a painter. The sketches in the painting also shows that he was experienced in creating artistic work as shown by the portrait of a king showing attributes of a monarch system. In this drawing, he brings the classical setting of space and light to bring the intended message to the viewers. This painting bringing his sensitivity on his work and his dedication to serve as a great painter. The painting also shows the fashion of that time period and the way the people
