The Problem with Eminent Domain Eminent domain, in the dictionary, is the right of a government or its agent to expropriate private property for public use, with payment of compensation. This means that the government can take any piece of property and change it into something for the public use through some sort of payment. There are many examples where eminent domain is being used. It has been used to facilitate transportation, supply water, construct public buildings, and aid in defense readiness. It is also used sometimes to establish parks, set aside open space for future generations, preserve historical areas and protect natural beauty. A monopoly is where one company has complete control over a certain trade or business. If that business makes more money and pay more taxes, the government will try to expand it for more tax money. They will use eminent domain to give that business more land for expansion. In the article “Eminent Domain: Being Abused,” Ken Lenhart, a store owner, tried to buy Bailey’s store through eminent domain when it states,” He could have negotiated…but…convinced the City of Mesa to try to buy Bailey’s land through eminent domain and then sell it to him.” This shows how the government is abusing the power of eminent domain. They may be paying more taxes but sometimes their working levels will lower and they might not be trusted by the people due to the bad work. Having a variety of shops will help create competition and the businesses will try harder to get money. That means work ethics will increase and more happy customers. They should stop making everything seem blighted, stop creating a monopoly by giving business property away, and preserve people’s home property because it is precious to them. The text “Eminent Domain: Abuse of Government Power?” is related to the text “Eminent Domain: Being Abused?” because they both talk about how the government abuses the power of eminent domain. Both sides are arguing about whether or not the use of eminent domain is the correct way of doing things. The two groups consist of people who are fighting against eminent domain while the others fight for eminent domain and progress. The end result can be good or bad for the community. This is important because everyone will be affected due to the fact that the government can take anyone’s property anytime and give it to someone else that will give them what they want
