Introduction Most simply, clinical decision making may be defined as the process of choosing between alternatives or options (Thompson & Stapley, 2011) more accurately, clinical decision making is a highly complex process where data is gathered and evaluated, and then a decision, judgment, or intervention is formulated (Pirret, 2007), it comprises of cognitive, intuitive and experiential processes (Pugh, 2002). This essay will discuss commonly used decision making models and their stages as defined by Elstein et al (1978) and their application to clinical decision making processes. Furthermore, the importance of clinical decision making for healthcare practitioners and paramedics will be explored. Decision Making Models and Their Application…
Justify responses to a particular incident or emergency in a health or social care setting. (D2) Scenario 1: a student you do 1:1 work with is very withdrawn. She looks like she hasn’t had a bath for days, has dark bags under her eyes and bruise marks on her wrists. When abuse is suspected it is important that the individual’s health and well-being is seen as the priority. This is why the local child protection officer should be notified so that they can investigate the situation to prevent the child from harming themselves or the abuser from harming them.…
This work has allowed me to advance my communication and interpersonal skills with both patients and the ambulance crew; as first responder I calm the patients and work with them to gain an understanding of their presenting complaint; this information is then relayed along with my observations to the ambulance crew when they arrive. As a CFR, I’ve also had the opportunity to join paramedics on observer shifts. This has given me an insight into their methods of practice and the challenges currently faced by paramedics, such as the lack of proper mental health support. This often leaves many cases for the ambulance…

Individuals performing different occupations may seem to be completely different, but in reality, they are all the same, mentally and emotionally. Also, these individuals will face dilemmas in their line of work that will make them question their morals. These inner battles may influence the individual's decisions, which may result in consequences for the individual. In Black Hawk Down by Mark Bowden, the soldiers were required to kill certain individuals that they would typically never hurt. Alternatively, the soldiers trusted individuals that had previously tried to kill them, and they decide not kill these individuals since the soldiers did not want to harm innocent individuals, knowing that this may put them at risk.…
This past summer, I expanded my medical knowledge by becoming a certified EMT. The course showed me a glimpse into parts of hands-on patient care that I was not exposed to in other settings. The program goals “include educating individuals to integrate the clinical data that they obtain from their medical history, physical examination, and laboratory analysis in order to form a differential diagnosis for the patient condition,” rather than simply relying on a one-size-fits-all approach. This corresponds to my own orientation and experience. In my different volunteer experiences, I have seen all different types of patients, and have seen how different approaches work for different patients.…

Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics respond to emergencies, from someone who may be having a heart attack in her home to multi-vehicle accidents on the highway. EMTs are most frequently found in ambulances but some may provide care for patients being transported by air as well. They provide first-line medical or emergency care for sick and injured people at the scene, which may be in the person’s home, at an accident site or other places and while they are being transported to the hospital for care. They typically operate in teams with one person serving as an emergency vehicle operator while the other continues to provide life-saving emergency care to the patient en route to a medical facility.…
I wish more people knew that under Good Samaritan Laws, voluntary rescuers are legally protected when aiding those in sudden cardiac arrest distress. Before becoming a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), I was completely unaware of the Good Samaritan Laws. In fact, I fallaciously believed that medical equipment such as an AED could only be handled by medical professionals. The widespread lack of awareness of Good Samaritan Laws prevents many from assisting in a sudden cardiac arrest situation.…
In American health care, resources are distributed by various social mechanisms, marketing process, or by different perception of medical need. The results of this inequality structures have been often the limited access to care for many of people, which provides many occasions for conflicts of interest and other unfair manipulation (Jonsen, Siegler, &Winslalde, 2010). The conceptions of justice and fairness are greatly significant to the health policy and health care improvement. The concept of justice raises the moral and social theories that work to distribute the benefits in the fair and justifiable way among all participants in the system. This week’s case study is an example of that social injustice, since the community hospital located in a poor and indigent black neighborhoods will close its emergency department from 10:00 pm until 6:00 am as a cost-saving measure.…
When someone dials 911, they expect someone to be there to help them. Whether they just had a slight fall, or are suffering from Cardiac Arrest, first responders need to be there for the citizens they serve. If a first responder is injured and cannot do their job properly, then they are putting the safety of the citizens at risk. The job of a first responder is to be there for the citizens, which is why workplace safety is always important to keep in mind. In the Fire and Emergency Services occupations, there are three common injuries; Sprains and strains, Smoke inhalation and broken bones.…
You are required to solve problems and scenarios with quickness and precision because someone’s life is at stake. A paramedic is trained to perform the skills and duties expertly, even after being woke from a dead sleep in the middle of the night, or after being on shift for 24 hours without sleep. Paramedics are trained to keep their composure and maintain a constant calmness during the most stressful situations. This trait is developed over time by consistent practice of clinical skills, building the trust with their rig partner, and being able to take command of any emergency scene they respond too. All paramedics must be able to maintain their composure during extremely stressful situations.…
