Heart of Darkness Comparison
After reading the poems Dante's Inferno, The Hollow men and watching the movie Apocalypse Now, i discovered that their are many themes that are similar to the Heart of Darkness. For example in the Heart of Darkness Marlowe, the protagonist says many things about human nature that directly reference t the poem Dante's Inferno. Or how Kurts, the antagonist in the Heart of Darkness, is inhumane and very similar to void like personalities of the men in “The Hollow Men”. Throughout this essay i will explain the recurring themes and the many similarities between the critically acclaimed works of art.
In the Heart of Darkness Marlowe is in many ways similar to Dante in Dante's Inferno. Both Marlowe and Dante are going on a mission. Although their journeys are very different both Marlowe and Dante display feelings of regret and are both naive of of the situations present to them. Not only this but, also Marlowe says many things that refer to Dantes Inferno. You should have heard him say, "My ivory." Oh, yes, I heard him. "My Intended, my ivory, my station, my river, my—" everything belonged to him. It made me hold my breath in expectation of hearing the wilderness burst into a prodigious peal of laughter that would shake the fixed stars in their places. The poem starts out with the quote “Mistah Kurtz- he dead” to symbolize how Kurtz was very similar to the hollow souled men that were depressed by how their lives have turned out. Both Kurtz and the Hollow men both lack humanity, meaning inside them is only an empty soul.
