They scampered about as quietly as they could, still tense with fear of awakening the monsters. But the forest that was once drenched in silence would now and then hear the chirp of a bird or the call of an animal. The two children traversed a great part of the forest without much conversation, for each was buried deep in their own thoughts. Maria wondered if all that was happening was real, or if it was just a daydream that would all vanish into nothingness as soon as she woke up. But she had a feeling that even if this were a dream, it would be a long tie before she woke up. As for Jack, his thoughts were obscured and hidden deep down inside of those oddly colored eyes, veiled by layers of skilled disguise. Maria started back, her heart stopping for a second. “What was that?” she asked, her voice trembling. Jack gently grabbed her hand and pushed her forward. “Let’s keep moving,” he said, “There are monsters nearby.” The air seemed to thicken around Maria as she continued, keeping close to Jack and always grasping tightly onto his hand.
