Artists, publishers, producers, and lawful distributors lose all the income and revenue they would have earned if their legitimate product had been legally acquired. “The Review of Industrial Organization” journal explains the true extent of piracy’s ripple effect on the industry’s revenue, “The Motion Pictures of America estimates that U.S studios lose more than $3 billion annually in box office revenue due to piracy” (De Vany & Walls 292). Moreover, not only do big production companies lose revenue because of the illegal reproduction of movies, but small businesses as well. Piracy diverts money away from distributors, theaters, video rental companies, and film providers as well. Furthermore, as more movies are pirated, or illegally reproduced, the businesses and people who legally supply these movies will also lose income. That includes, newspapers, ad agencies, and television stations that promote the films.
