Our society influences our beliefs, what we see as valuable and what has meaning. Many people look to America as a country full of opportunity, they free to make their own choices and make a name for themselves. Because of this approach it is clear how an idealist society arises, our thoughts on life and the value of it is driven by ideals that our society around us presents. Our group discussed that euthanasia may promote a society of healthy, pain, struggle free perfect people rejecting those that suffer from disabilities, diseases, and mental health issues. Many times, when we think of individuals with these struggles we look to them as lesser than us. It is contradictory and a bit ironic that our society recognizes that those who have disabilities are in fact human and belong in families and communities, but at the same time others fight that those that have certain disabilities should have the option to have physician assisted suicide, devaluing their life. I think that the government should be involved with the decision of legalizing euthanasia because in a sense our society is the government. I found it particularly interesting that it in the long run legalizing euthanasia does not make a whole lot of difference for the government’s medical budget. Often times we forget who created us and why we are created. God created us with intention and purpose, as equals and he instilled in us a desire for him, which only he can fill. Our culture turns to materialistic goods and other idols to fill that void. Comfort and satisfaction is the goal. Our consumerist society gives us this mindset that we are in charge and the choice for life and death is ours. Pain and suffering is obviously undesirable and I think that sometimes this carries over to the idea or option for euthanasia. In our day to day live we make many choices. We have the ability to pick and choose what we want out of life or do not want out of life. I think that anyone goes through difficult times in their life so some extend and has their own set of struggles. I think that each individual goes through a point in their lives where they wish to end it.
