Atticus defends Tom Robinson in court, Tom is a black man accused of raping a white girl. The time and place the story takes place is in the 1930s in Alabama. Atticus knowns the whole town is against him defending Tom. Even though the odds are against him, he will not give up the case. Atticus knows Tom is innocent but does not believe that they have any chance of winning the case. He is going to defend Tom anyways no matter what the odds may be (Lee 75). When there is a rabid dog in Maycomb it may be Atticus to the rescue. Atticus was known as “One Shot Finch” because he was a very good gun shooter. When sheriff Heck Tate arrives on the scene he is too scared to take the shot because he does not want to hit the Radley House. He hands the gun to Atticus so Atticus takes the shot and kills the dog (96). Miss Maudie felt that Atticus never told his kids Scout and Jem about him being a good shooter because “. . . shooin’s different from playing the piano or it like. I think maybe he put his gun down when he realized that God had given him an unfair advantage over the most living things.
