Irony is the use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning; or, incongruity between what is expected and what actually occurs. This is shown when Atticus says “ ... he swore out a warrant, no doubt signing it with his left hand, and Tom Robinson now sits before you, having taken the oath with the only good hand which he possesses--his right hand."( 272-273 ). Irony is used here to prove that Tom Robinson is innocent. Because of the warrant that was issued with a left handed person, which is the same hand that would have left the scars on Mayella, to try and get Tom arrested and killed. As proven by “ But I want to play with Walter, Aunty, why can’t I?” This setting is important because it gives us the views of Aunt Alexandra and how she views colored people. She does not view them the same as Jem, Scout, or atticus. She has her own thesis about colored folks and because of this she will not let Scout or anyone in the family play with him. Thus, again showing racial segregation in Maycomb, but this time with a female. This chapter also shows that Scout is getting more knowledge of how her family views certain people and that she has to decide why she wants to be with, even if the family is saying not to play with that one
