I was always in the top percentage of my class. Living in the city taught me so much about being independent and strong. At a very young age, I was responsible for making my own food, ironing my school uniform, doing homework and other such things. Our neighbors and my parent’s friends would always comment on our lifestyle. Once again, people started to question my mother’s dedication to motherhood. In most people’s eyes she was a bad mother because she didn’t stay home cooking and cleaning for me. But, by this point in my life I had nothing but pure respect for her. She became my idol. I wish to grew up to be like my mother; having the strength to not only work extremely hard to provide a great education for me but also being there for me at all time not physically but emotionally. That’s what I felt that a lot of my friend’s mothers could not do for them. Goes without saying my grandparents were in complete awe that I would be moving to America by myself. They went above and beyond to make this impossible for me. Some of our relatives came over to our house with numerous news article cut outs and statistics about how unsafe America is. In their mind, I would be completely lost and devastated in a foreign country. Interestingly enough these people used to praise America for all its opportunities and advancements for ages. My family reunions always consisted of someone bringing up the country and how they would leave every thing behind if given the opportunity to move there. However, when a young girl like me was getting this opportunity for education; none of them seemed to be able to process this information. Once again, with my mother’s guidance and support I found myself surrounded by a whole new set of opportunities. Moving to America undoubtedly came with several financial as well as emotional challenges but growing up independent and strong just like my mother made everything a breeze. I am dedicated to complete my education more than ever and make my parents proud. I have surprised many people with my strong will and hard work and I am not letting anything change that either.
