George could now go on his own and keep and job without trying to get Lennie out of trouble. Since Lennie can’t think this was George’s best solution for peace. Shooting Lennie was the only way to end Lennie’s bad behavior since he could never learn to fix it and he never could resist touching soft things. George’s response was accurate and necessary because Lennie is unable to comprehend right from wrong and he does not understand the feeling of guilt. At the beginning of the novella “Of Mice and Men”, Steinbeck describes the two main characters, Lennie Small, a large man who is mentally challenged and George Milton, a small and intelligent man. We already see a literary element, verbal irony with Lennie’s last name, Small. This exemplifies irony because Lennie is, in reality a large man, making his last name ironic. Lennie and George exhibit an interesting relationship, that is said to be similar to that of a dog and his master in the novel. He uses it from the beginning when they are running from Weed to later in the novel with Candy and his dog, and Lennie kills anything soft. These key events grant the readers a deeper insight into the lives of the character and how they react to daily affairs. Steinbeck uses foreshadowing in *Of Mice and Men* to demonstrate to the reader how past events can predict what will happen and maybe repeat in the future accentuating important issues and conflicts. After Lennie kills Curley’s wife, Lennie and George reunite at the brush for the last time before George eventually shoots Lennie in the back of the head (Steinbeck 106). Truest of Friendship True friends accept each other, stick around a challenging time for each other, look out for each other, and make sacrifices for each other and these qualities are beautifully depicted, in John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men, by two main characters named George Milton and Lennie Small. Throughout the novel one can see George and Lennie taking care of each other , George being Lennie's protector and guardian and Lennie, his constant companion.
