I thought the video, A Class Divided, did an excellent job of illustrating the damage that discrimination can do. From the start of the exercise I, who was just watching an old video, became very uncomfortable and sickened by the feeling I had. As I watched the uncomfortable feeling blanket those children, I became angry. I don’t think I could do what the teacher did. I wanted to hug the kids.…
Interesting and to be honest the first order of business after viewing the video was to establish a connection between this TAMUC Dr. Dawg and their institution. In general terms to review their academic credentials, as such evidence points to the fact that the individual in the video is Dr. Rusty Waller, Educational Leadership from Texas A&M University- Commerce. Specifically, from their Center for Faculty Excellence and Innovation (Moseley, 2017). Dr. Dawg or Dr. Waller presented within the context of their video some valid general points that are essential to the research process. An excellent point that they presented was at the onset of the video or the issues with research today and the vagueness that may be a part of the equation.…
The article “Communication: It’s Blocking and Its Facilitation by Carl R. Rogers discusses his two ideologies on communication. Rogers first starts the article by describing a person who needs psychotherapy, which is someone who has a failure in communication. A person who has communication issues has the issue with himself and with social relationships. Rogers then gives his two claims about communications. His first claim on communication is he knows what is hindering people from communicating with each other.…
Communication between staff, staff and students, staff and parents, students and students all support positive relationships within a school setting by participants being aware of and having an understanding of: individual character, personality, thought process, cultural belief, language barrier, friendship groups, working groups, learning difficulty, processing difficulty. A happy, content, settled, predictable and supportive communication environment increases the wellbeing of all concerned, staff and students alike, allowing them a supportive base from which to grow, learn, feel confident to ask questions and seek appropriate support and knowledge tools available to enable them to learn and gain their best personal achievement. Within the…
o I really loved this video! It is something I never would have thought of myself, but can see myself possibly implementing it into my future classroom. I feel as if these trauma-informed strategies help a student go into a different area of the room and calm their frustrations/strong emotions. Allowing the children with emotional/behavior disorder to have a space in the room that allows them to regulate their emotions and feel comfortable in their surroundings. It also gives these children the opportunity to make their own choices.…
Therapeutic communication is a learned process that health care professionals must practice when interacting with people who share similarities with future clients. I practiced therapeutic communication when I volunteered to be a “buddy” for a special needs guest at the “Night to Shine” Prom at Genesis Church in Tallahassee. Tim Tebow’s foundation sponsors proms held at churches and community centers across the nation. The event pairs people with special needs with volunteers who agree to be their “buddy” for the night; the prom’s committee paired Justin and I. As a buddy, I ensure Justin participated in all the activities and safely returned home after the event. I used therapeutic communication with Justin during the night in order to meet…

In Kevin Daum’s (2013) article, 8 Ways to Improve Your Communications Right Now, he presents a sensible set of simple tips that the reader can instantly apply to their communications. Likewise, his informative and at times witty advice is easy to agree with and employ. For instance, Daum’s (2013) tip number three recommends asking two thought-provoking and pertinent questions before the conversation ends. By doing this, Daum (2013) asserts, “[it] will make you think harder about what is being said and will ensure both parties were fully engaged.” Daum’s tips cover verbal and email communications so well that I want to expand on them to include more written communications, as well as advice on presentations.…

Group communication is one of the most important types of communication in the world today. In a society that is becoming more and more engulfed in themselves, through cell phones, and social media, it is important that the value of communicating with one another is not lost or forgotten about. Our group thought long and hard about a movie that would best portray group communication and all of its components, and what better movie than one all about a team of cheerleaders? Bring It On is a movie that displays the characteristics and dynamics of a group, and how they communicate in every way possible. Assertion vs. Aggression Knowing the difference between assertion and aggression is a very important part in communicating effectively.…
The sessions can be delivered one-to-one or in groups. The recorded scripts facilitate participants' ability to practice the technique at their choice of location and time. With practice, participants can often learn to evoke positive…
This essay will discuss effective way to overcome communication barriers, as well as developing a therapeutic relationship with the patient. Four problems will be discussed with solutions specific to the case study, in order to communicate effectively with the patient. As health care professionals, it is in our duty to be concerned with the emotions, thoughts and behaviours of our patients in relation to the worth of themselves and of others; to treat them as a being of worth and in a way that is respectful of them as a valued individual (Royal College of Nursing, 2015). In order to create a therapeutic relationship with the patient and effective communication, there is a need to clear all judgements and focus on respecting the individual; regardless of religions, morals, personal beliefs and age.…
The 35th President of the United States understood the importance of diversity in our world. The above quote is an excerpt from his Commencement Address at the American University on June 10th of 1963. Today -- 53 years later -- our generation is still trying to embrace diversity and inclusion in various ways. One of the places in which diversity and inclusion is essential is in college and university environments. For the Group Communication course held in the Fall 2016 quarter, students were assigned groups and were asked to explore different concepts relating to Group Communication theory.…

Personal theories are something that everyone has, whether they are aware of it or not. We can have personal theories about family and friends, pets, the environment, or even innate objects like doors and television. Personal theories are based on everyday experience, taken for granted, usually private, and very stable. (Ruben, Stewart, & Householder, 2014). These theories help us understand just about everything we do in terms of communicating.…
