Fear In 'The Pit And The Pendulum'

Fear causes people to do bizarre things. In literature, fear can be used to make the reader feel sympathetic towards the protagonist. In Edgar Alan Poe’s book, The Pit and the Pendulum, Poe uses fear to captivate the reader into wanting to know what happens next. In the Crucible by Arthur Miller, fear is used in two ways, overcoming fear and letting fear ruin your life. There is always some sort of fear in literature, even if it isn't obvious. You can never escape fear, you can only overcome it. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the people feared three main things. One was being put to death. The second was that they feared their reputation would be tainted by associating with someone accused of witchcraft. Their greatest fear, since they …show more content…
Reputation is the way other people see you as and integrity is how you see yourself. Reverend Parris and Abigail Willams chose to protect their reputation. Rebecca Nurse and John Proctor protected their integrity and didn't care how other people saw them. Abigail protected her reputation by not confessing to falsely accusing other people of witchcraft. Reverend Parris didn't want anybody to know that Betty, his daughter, was sick. He thought that if people thought that there was witchcraft in his house then he would lose his position as the minister of Salem. Rebecca …show more content…
You can tell that he is controlling because of the stage directions, “with a violent undertone” (Miller 54) and you can tell that Elizabeth Proctor is afraid of him because in her stage directions it says, “quietly, fearing to anger him by prodding.” (Miller 53) Abigail Williams uses fear by controlling the girls in the village because she knows that they are afraid of her. Elizabeth Proctor also fears Abigail Williams because Elizabeth said that “Abigail brings the other girls into the court, and where she walks the crowd will part like the sea for Israel. And folks are brought before them, and if they scream and howl and fall to the floor - the person’s clapped in the jail for bewitchin’ them.” (Miller 53) Arthur Miller uses his characters to suggest fear without them actually saying anything.
