Women were being pressured to stay at home or if they wanted to work they had to do a women’s job, such as cleaning or nursing. As Dr. Urguhart discussed within his lecture men were working in factories while a woman was to stay, but that began to change within the 1900’s. Between 1835 to 1971, House staff increased from 65% to 90% indicating that women were no longer staying at home and the families need extra help within the household. Women were being liberated. Placing themselves next to men within the industry, textiles, shoe companies, tobacco companies, and confection. Even though women were dismissing the men's idea of how women should behave, men were not as disapproving.
