For example we have to wear gear, which consists of bunker pants, jacket, boots, nomex hood, helmet, fire resistant gloves and most importantly an SCBA. SCBA stands for self-controlled breathing apparatus, we wear these so we can breathe going into toxic air like fire smoke or hazardous fumes. Also we need to be able to identify all the tools on the fire engines and make sure the water tank is full for every call. In the beginning of the month we go through apparatus checks to make sure everything is in the right place and working properly. When people are having the worst days of their life, they look to us to be there for them through whatever is happening. Firefighters help the public when there is no hope left, and to me that is extremely motivating. When we are in this profession we create a strong bond with the people we work with they become our family. When we work with people who push us to be great, it gives us the motivation to be the best we can be. Being in this profession, we have to want to do what we do, or we will not do it right. Not enjoying what we do can cause us to not use the correct skills we have to the best of our ability.
To conclude this essay, having the right skills, equipment, and motivation can be three essential components to being a smart and successful firefighter. Firefighting is a dangerous profession and when taking the right precautions our profession can be enjoyable. Things can always happen and go wrong but having these three main concepts as a foundation, makes the job safer for everyone involved.
