Learning goals identify the knowledge, skills, and capacities a student should achieve in that class. This is very effective because it will increase the student’s confidence, self of belonging, and retention (Brown University, 2017).
The first standard listed in the syllabus for First Year Seminar is information literacy. This standard is used for revising your search strategies, integrating relevant information, questioning and evaluating the complexity of the information, and using it in an ethical manner. Information literacy is the ability to recognize when information is needed and having the ability to locate, evaluate, and use the information effectively (http://www.ala.org/acrl/standards/informationliteracycompetency). This learning outcome has five different standards within in. All these standards are used for is explaining what information literacy is and tends to confuse the students or professor reading it. This learning outcome is important for a student to formulate questions and hypotheses, evaluating knowledge, collecting and analyzing data, and drawing conclusions. This learning outcome should not be replaced and should be kept on the syllabus for this first-year seminar class. This type of learning would be extremely useful to students and could potentially help their future. Inquiry based learning is great for student’s communication and collaborative learning skills (Justice, 2007). Inquiry is defined as seeking for truth, information, and knowledge by questioning existing knowledge and data. Inquiry based thinking will also be very effective for the future work of students. They will learn about research questions, data collection, data analysis, and determining whether something is true or false. These types of skills will be needed further in education, and in the work field. These skills are said to help an individual in many various aspects of their life such as presentation, research, professional skills, epistemological knowledge, personal belief, tactic professional insights, collaboration, and critical thinking.
