When a person has good health literacy they are able to get their hands on and understand health information, health services and the terminology used in order to make informed decisions about their own health.
What is Health Status?
The health status of a person or group is often determined by their life expectancy and sometimes even a self-assessment of a particular person’s health. The term is used more broadly when discussing physical illness and mental wellbeing of a person.

People that are more likely to have low functional literacy are migrants to Australia and do not speak English as their first language. This is due to the fact that much of what is said to them or that they learn has the possibility of being lost in translation, as sometimes certain things that can be said in English may translate to something completely different in a foreign language. They may also experience difficulty, as they may find it hard to work with others in their community due to the fact that they are unable to communicate effectively what they are thinking or feeling and may not be able to understand what native English speakers are also thinking and feeling.
