Some, like gay persons fighting for same-sex marriage, would argue for obtaining the legal documentation of their spouse. In this case, they wish to earn the liberty and social status of being legally married. Although they fight to change their social status, they still lose a part of their individuality. In both different and same-sex marriages, there are limitations of what they can or cannot do. In contemporary society, mostly in recent years, marriage promises both partners intimacy and privacy. In other terms, marriage is a closed relationship in which one partner is devoted to the other partner and vice versa. As signed by contract, they must commit to their relationships and must not settle in debauchery with other partners. Marriage does not necessarily suggest the end of drinking and clubbing, but that they must decrease all other activities of social gatherings to aid one another, especially if expecting a baby in the next few years. Some traditions expect the husband’s family to provide some medium of money for the wife’s family. This is common in arranged marriages in which the man would give monetary sums to the wife’s family in exchange for the wife. The wife’s family would have to see if the monetary value is sufficient enough to provide for her. If it is the case, then the marriage would be arranged. Using arranged marriage as an example, the husband would always have to provide for the wife so that she will work for him physically and emotionally. He is stripped of his freedom to do anything else and must work tediously to earn money. Even in marriages that stem from love, most men are the providers of the family so that the women can focus on childbearing. This is restrictive for the wife because “the home no longer frees [the wife] from wage slavery; it only increases her task” (Goldman, p. 5). Not only that, the cost of marriage is generally very expensive. The man and woman and their families must pay for arranging the engagement and wedding. Essentially both partners try to convey their feelings in luxury to make the event unforgettable and significant. Weddings are often the most important event in one’s life, making the event highly extolled and personal. The wedding is thus meticulously organized and lavish. In addition to the wedding, the cost of raising a child is just as
