Different styles of therapy would be irrelevant. When gender plays a role, counseling is done in a different way because not everyone has the same problems. Couples use gender roles as a form of bonding. Without this, couples may have more tension in their relationship (Marks, Lam, and McHale 5). When defining gender roles in therapy families figure out where they all fit, and can learn to live in harmony (6). Gender role is not necessary to be part of every aspect of counseling because gender role is not part of every family’s issue (15). Many people are afraid that if gender is taken out of family therapy that people will become confused and will not know how to take care of their children (Coleman, Avis, and Turen 9). Women often feel oppressed, so when in therapy, counseling should be done in a way that is the least oppressive (Haddock, Macphee, and Zimmerman page 156).Women that consider themselves to be feminists are more confident and feel better about themselves, so taking gender out of therapy would cause these women who come to counseling to have to find a new way to feel confident.
