Women, more than men, tend to experience gender inequality based on the prejudice that the female are weaker, more emotional, and more likely to have their employment interrupted (Macionis, 2015). In the workplace, females usually find themselves in the nurturing and supportive roles, while male employees gravitate to the more physical demanding and leadership roles (Macionis, 2015). “Research reveals that women must prove themselves time and again, and often are judged only on their past achievements, whereas men are measured by their future potential” (McKeown, 2015, p.823). Employment positions requiring physical strength, that have historically been male dominated, such as firemen and the military, are opening up to women but it is still difficult for the female not only in successful recruitment but also with the high incident of sexual assault (Macionis, 2015). Like ageism, “gender role stereotyping is prominent is media and advertisements wherein companies rely on socially prescribed expectations to sell their products” (Peters, Holmgreen, & Oswald, 2015, p.160). Women also face sexism as they decide to work part-time to raise or begin families (Macionis, 2015).
