The four nitrogen containing bases also stand for Adenine, Guanine, Thymine, and Cytosine. DNA has many different jobs that it has to do constantly to keep the body going. Certain genes in the body are controlled to be turned on or off, because sometimes we don’t need every single gene at all times. Therefore, DNA will let the genes know in those certain controls centers whether or not we need the gene, it most cases it is too make a protein. A few of the other jobs DNA has are, no function genes that have no effect on anything, and also genes that need to carry information and instructions in order to make the proteins for the body. A protein is a long chain of amino acids. Proteins help to build any organism within the body. The protein-coding process done by the DNA is an essential need for the body to function. The way that protein-coding works is there divided into codons. Codons are in sets of three, there job is to specify amino acids. Also, codons take on another important rule, by letting the DNA know that it is coming to the end of a protein. That is also known as a stop codon, which means …show more content…
A mutation is a change in the sequence of the DNA, sometimes when it is being copied during DNA replication there are mistakes, but we have enzymes that will repair them. Every so often the enzymes might miss a mistake and that is how one of a few ways a mutation occurs (http://learn.genetics.utah.edu). A few other ways that mutations can occur are from a change of proteins, can be inherited, or caused by environmental factors. Also, cancer is a very common mutation that happens in the DNA, because the growth control genes aren’t doing their job therefore, the cells just keep growing (http://www.yourgenome.org). If the DNA isn’t repaired it will be passed on to the next generation. Mutations can vary from one to another, some cause deadly disease and maybe even death, but for the most part many mutations aren’t harmful. Almost all mutations have no bad effects on the body, because there are large areas of the genome. Sometimes, it can even give somebody a survival advantage in the world. Mutations are known as good and bad, but more so as different rather than something that will be harmful to the body
