The novel ‘Trash’ by Andy Mulligan explores a wide variety of global issues that heavily impact the world that live in today. These involve the issues of child labour, poverty, government corruption and social justice. Through the novel ‘Trash’, we are able to view these issues in greater detail as we read through the character’s perspectives in the book. By reading ‘Trash’, we learn about how poverty is a continuous cycle that hinders the survival of people. We are taught about the issue of child labour, where young children are forced to work in order to keep their family and themselves alive. Throughout the novel ‘Trash’, Mulligan has explored deeper into the lives of people like Raphael and Gardo and now instead of seeing the hardworking plebeians that most people see on the outside, the readers are able to see people just like us who live a different lifestyle. “A long time later I would think to myself: Everyone needs a key. With the right key, you can bust the door wide open. Because nobody’s going to open it for you.” Mulligan has used imagery to convey the message of hope. By this, we are able to identify the feelings and emotions hidden in people living in poverty that a lot of people do not normally see. Even though they have hopes and dreams, they still believe that they need to work for the luxuries in life which is a quality that the reader would not have uncovered if it were not for ‘Trash’. “That is our plan, and nothing will stop us.” Mulligan has used this phrase in order for the reader to gain an understanding of the determination of people to escape the cycle of poverty. Raphael, Gardo and Rat say the phrase in order to deliver the amount of willpower people may have when they have a set out plan.
