Literacy Narrative What is Literacy?Google defines literacy as “the ability to read and write.” Literacy plays a major role in our everyday lives, writing our essays that are due within two days, writing a post on facebook, reading a text message, etc. Everyone experiences literacy in a different way, some experience a struggle, not being able to comprehend the purpose of literacy or avoiding it. and others thrive in it. My experience was somewhat neutral due to the fact that as a child I loathed reading and writing, but as I went on through my education I grew to love it.…
(Duke, 2004) “Students will be exposed to informational text by using and being taught explicit skills and comprehension strategies in all content areas. Students will gain insight through various genres and the different strategies needed to decode and read informational text. With the implementation of the “Informational Text Library” students will be exposed to different levels of non-fiction text and a mixture of genres that will provide more opportunities for independent reading and to be read to. By having an assortment of informational text students will be able to practice or use the skills and strategies taught through books that are of interest to them and have an authentic…
Tamia Fluker’s Critique Professor Jaye gave his English 101 class an assignment to write a literacy narrative. The narrative’s objective was to discuss a time in one’s life that impacted their literacy growth. Tamia Fluker’s literacy narrative “A Day in the Life of a Reader” successfully met this objective. Although Fluker’s essay had a lot of positive areas there were a few areas in which she could improve.…
Have you ever read a story about a slave who stands up to her owner? If not, Laurie Halse Anderson’s award winning novel “Chains” is a good read for you. Isabel and her sister Ruth are young slaves during the American Revolutionary War. They are denied their right to freedom promised in a will, after their owner dies. Ruth gets taken away and sent to Charleston.…
Both Sherman Alexie’s “Superman and Me” and Eudora Welty’s “Clamorous to Learn” share their experiences and beliefs about how literacy impacted them. “Clamorous to Learn” has a much less “formal” tone compared to “Superman and Me”. While both authors use style elements in their excerpts to connect to the audience in an emotional way “Clamorous to Learn” uses antimetables and metaphors while “Superman and Me” uses repetition. Sherman Alexie narrates the memories he has as child reading, and how literature influenced him to become a writer to carry on what he learned to his audience. In paragraph seven, he says “I read the books I borrowed from the library.…
Connotations, FHS's Literary Magazine is now accepting submissions. This year, our staff would like more students to submit their art, photo, and writing, to our staff, so that later this year, our magazine proves to be representative of the creative talent that we have at our school. As English teachers, and the greatest champions that students have for their writing throughout the year, we'd like to reach out to your classes over the next two weeks and let your students know about the opportunities that they have through our magazine. During class visits, two Connotations staff members visit at the start of class, and give their peers information on how to submit their work to us, and what we're looking for. They never take more than two…
Disciplinary literacy is the merging of content knowledge, skills, reading, writing and critical thinking in a way that is relevant to the content area. According to Buehl (2011),"Each field has its own ways of using text to create and communicate meaning” (p 24). It is important to note that when practicing disciplinary literacy, teachers remain anchored in the disciplines. Does this mean that content-specific teachers should become reading and writing teachers? No, it simply means that they should stress the reading and writing that is specific to their subjects.…
I was surprised to read how the term literacy has changed over time and all of the meaning that it now holds. “Literacy has morphed to characterize someone’s level of knowledge or competence in a particular area or subject,” according to Vacca (2014, p. 12). Reading and writing were the first concepts that would come to my mind when thinking of the word literacy, therefore, I was shocked to read how “complex and multidimensional the concept of literacy”(Vacca, 2014, p. 12) has become. Computer literacy, digital literacy, information literacy, media literacy, and health literacy are just a few examples of this concept. As society’s ability to communicate has evolved, so has the concept of literacy.…
The Yellow Wall-Paper: [Mental Prison] Gilman, O’Connor, and Chopin, are a few of the many that impacted us in many ways. Each of the short story’s we have read had a different purpose in their literature. After reading Gilman’s literature I have found myself related to her experiences because at some point we experience medical issues. Even though we may not realize it we all suffer from a health issue whether it is an anxiety, overthinking, and even focusing. I like the character suffer from depression and this is one of the reasons I can relate to the main character.…
Prior to the plays setting “Oedipus goes to Delphi where he asks the oracle who his true parents are. To this the god responds that he will kill his father and marry his mother.” (Hogan P. 19) Determined not to allow the prophecy to come true Oedipus runs away from his home in Corinth. During Oedipus’ travel, he encounters a small group of men “where three roads meet”. Oedipus first displays his arrogance by not peacefully resolving the confrontation he encountered, knowing that the prophet prophesied Oedipus killing his own father.…
Layers of Fiction Symbolism is represented by levels of pragmatic and figurative meaning. As an example, in “The Yellow Wallpaper,” Gilman incorporates the very wallpaper to represent this idea. The wallpaper displays more than just symbolism; it also shows the time period and theme of the story. These elements of fiction are also supported by the first person narration in helping the reader understand and analyze the text. This combination helps to show the relationships of the protagonist, overall setting, and theme of the story.…
Literacy, the ability to read and write, and the overall structure to learning any type of information. Literacy is something that can be funded in newspapers, the internet, television, books, and many other resources. It is something so active and diverse and is constantly being influenced by different source materials and situations. Being able to define and find strong points of literacy within is sometimes difficult. The best way to tackle this question is to find out who is one’s main literary sponsors.…
While content area literacy may not be easy it is important to a student’s success. Promoting content literacy is different from simply promoting reading skills. Content literacy includes addressing TEKS from all subject areas while working on reading and writing. As a general education teacher it is important that we learn how to successfully meet the needs of the students in all core…
Overall the article, article Literacy and Language as Learning in Content-Area Classes: A Departure From "Every Teacher a Teacher of Reading" has helped me understand the importance of literacy in all content and in all content there is literacy. As a teacher I can bring this lesson to my peers and help them understand the every teacher is a reading teacher concept. Fisher and Ivey done a wonderful job explaining this concept and the strategies and precautions that I can take and share with my students to help them become…
Throughout the past few weeks of Studies in English Education, the main aspect that has been addressed is the term ‘multiliteracies.’ From completing this portfolio and attending each of the workshops, I have learned that to become a text producer I need to be involved with the variety of functions in language and literacy. Hill (2012) states that ‘to be multiliterate means to be literate in print-based and new communication technologies’ (p. 361). Such technologies include ‘electronic literacies, technoliteracies, digital literacies, visual literacies and print-based literacies’ (Hill 2012, p. 361).…
