In the story, “Mother's Tongue” Amy Tan as a child was affected by her mother’s ability to speak English, for example, “I think my mother’s english almost had an effect on limiting my possibilities in life as well”(Tan,15,113). Tan would have to always translate for her mother. Due to the fact of her mother’s limited english affected Tan’s chances in America. Additionally, due to her mother’s english speaking skill, she felt ashamed of her english, “I know this for a fact, because when i was growing up, my mother’s ‘limited’ English limited my perception of her. I was ashamed of her english”(Tan,14,70). Being influenced by the American language, Tan thought less of her mother due to her broken english. Moreover, Tan’s friends couldn't understand her mother’s broken english, which caused Tan to feel more ashamed. Furthermore, not knowing the English language created an conflict in her childhood, for instance, “A voice from my childhood says: “you are other. You are less than. You are unalterably alien”(Noda,38,4). Being not able to communicate with anyone created early conflicts in life. This made any child to feel lonely and they don’t belong in
