From that point on we have been renters. It gives my parents a sense of freedom to be able to say we can move if things change for us. We have rented the same home for over 6 years. I call it home much more than the one they had built.…
The article, “Life After High School”, is an informative and reflective delve into the society acclaimed experience of high school, written by Annie Murphy Paul of Time Magazine. Using academic investigations, personal experience, and several keen examples, Paul addresses the relationship between social and academic status in high school, to success thereafter. Throughout the reading, Paul points out how the primary social aspects of high school such as, popularity, identification of an individual through hobbies or interests, and the strength of one’s academic pursuits, relate to an individual’s overall experience of high school, as well as how they are perceived by other students and teachers. Primarily, the article points out that although…
Every part of our old house would be thrown away to make room for the new one. On the day that my house actually came down, my parents explained to my sisters and me that we would be doing almost all the work as a family to rebuild it. They really weren't kidding when they said that. The next three years were spent digging trenches and picking up trash around our property, not…
Clear skies: one cloud left, two right. Slight breeze from the south, a typical fall day. The SHISH of the club in the swing, and the ball sounding TING off the club over and over. Music is coming from the phone on my golf cart with the no disturb mode turned on. Playing every day alone or with the team, always focused on the game, ignoring the reality of busy high school life.…
In my life, growing up, I have felt I am different from other students attending school because I have a different background than others. I grew up in a poor family and drug/alcohol induced life. I grew up faster than a child should and my brothers practically raised me to be my own person. Statistically speaking, rich children have a better chance of completing school and continuing to a degree than poor children do. According to Julia B. Isaacs on Brookings Institution, fewer than half of the poor economic class children are ready for school at age 5.…
As a growing and learning student in the modern time, school and extra-curricular activities are a part of my everyday life. After waking up before the sun is up, getting ready, and beginning my day, school and tests follow. The ending of the school day carries on to fuse glass, music/ orchestra, and homework. One obstacle I have faced as growing up to be a well-rounded individual is to be accomplished in at least one field. My mother's side of the family are all musicians, and I have also started shaping my path on that road.…
Every teenager has experienced the important and terrifying question, what do you want to be when you grow up? For me I had no idea, and as I tried to figure it out I came to realise there are endless possibilities when it comes to the future. I loved the idea of being a teacher, but what made me set on architecture was the architecture classes and technology classes I took in high school. It was the only place where I felt like me. So I pursued it.…
I have been reading since I can remember and my opinion on reading has been a rollercoaster since then. My parents read to me every night until I was about 8 years old and then I began to read on my own. When I was in 4th grade I was able to quickly finish the books I picked out, I would read on the bus, in the car, at family events, I was constantly consumed in the material unable to put the book down until I simply fell asleep. Then, when I went to middle school I did not read as often as I previously had been, as I was only reading the books that I was assigned to read, which were not books I was interested in, during that time period it was very hard for me to stay focused. Transitioning into high school I began to read more, I was content…
Growing up in my elementary school days I had a really troubling time reading and writing. I was tested in school and then again privately and my mother found out I that have dyslexia. My mother brought me to a tutoring center that was just for kids with dyslexia twice a week for two years. At the center I worked on a program called Orton-Gillingham. I really did not like going there, it was hard work.…
College can be a rough transition from high school. Most students in high school have a license and cars and are just practicing independency. This liberty is almost often ripped away from freshman and sophomores in college who most times aren’t allowed to have cars. Although they don’t necessarily need cars due to living on campus, it still derives them of the liberty of going home as one pleases. Unlike juniors and seniors with cars who are free to leave at their own discretion.…
Wake up in the morning, pop my ankles. Sit down to eat breakfast, pop my back. Go to school and sit at a desk for an hour, pop my neck. You could say that “popping” has become a bad habit. Sometimes I will pop my knuckles consciously, while other times, the need comes absentmindedly.…
Like a lot of people, going to school has never seemed to come too easily to me. Whether it was doing long assignments or just waking up at early hours of the day to drag myself to campus to face the day it just wasn’t clicking for me. I started high school with the intentions of making a ton of friends, taking part in school events, and getting flawless grades. What I didn’t realize is that things don’t just happen like that if you’re not willing to go the extra mile, especially if you don’t have a great support system. High school became a limbo of doing homework minutes before class started, if at all, coming to school late coffee in hand after getting five to four hours of sleep, and trying to maintain any relationships I had almost as…
My childhood seemed normal when I was a young adolescent. I played outside all the time, doing normal kid stuff, such as: digging worms from the mud after a rainstorm, playing “house” with my sisters, and watching cartoons. That wasn’t a constant for long, as my parents divorced when I was in first grade. The divorce made things hard on everybody for a long time. Eventually, my dad moved to Idaho from Montana after the split to live close to his family.…
As a little girl, I always dreamed about being in high school. Having a boyfriend, a giant group of friends, being prom queen, driving, and partying. For a large portion of my life, I thought that would be reality...until it wasn’t. Waking up at 5:30am for nearly a month truly gives you a reality check, especially if it is to go run. I was exhausted.…
Imagine that you are a farmer. You have just returned home from a long day of working in the field. Exhausted you unlace your boots, kick them off, and head inside to your children. As you walk through the door your family is waiting for you to eat supper, it is nine o'clock at night. That night as you eat your late supper your family takes turns sharing their experiences of their day with you.…
