Introduction
My aim of this report is to discuss the vaccine Gardasil and how it protects against the human papillomavirus (HPV). I will detail what HPV and how it affects the human body and how Gardasil can protect against it. It is currently given as a series of 2 injections over the course of 6 to 24 month period. Girls who began the course before September 2014 are given 3 injections. Consent to have HPV vaccine is legally the decision of the girl and not of the parent unlike other vaccines in childhood. There has been discussions about offering the vaccine to boys as well as girls as detailed by the BBC website "Herd immunity only works in later life for males who are sexually active with females who have been vaccinated - it won't work for men who are sexually active in countries where the vaccine isn't available, those who have sex with men, or those who have sex with the estimated 15% of girls who haven't had the vaccine." …show more content…
I have shown that the HPV-16 and HPV-18 types cause around 70% of cervical cancer and HPV-6 and HPV-11 cause the majority of genital warts and this is what the vaccine protects against. I have detailed how the vaccine is created and how it does not contain the HPV virus itself therefore does not create a risk of infecting the recipient. I have discussed the history of the vaccine and who it is administered to. I have also discussed possibilities in the future to increase the number of people receiving the vaccine to boys as well as
