The First Amendment of the United States Constitution is the freedom of speech. It is an amendment all Americans exercise daily. It is very important that we as a nation, preserve, enforce and protect this right. But not all countries install these rights for their people. For example in 1970's China, many people had very little rights and freedom. A book named Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress was written 17 years ago all about the reeducation of young children and teens in China. It shows us recent dark history of China and different perspectives of censorship. Mao Zedong (also known as Chairmen Mao) was a Chinese leader from 1949 till his death in 1976. He moved millions of urban youth into rural areas to be reeducated during his cultural revolution movement. Many kids were taken away from their families and never saw them again. Mao Zedong also banned books he deemed as inappropriate. Many schools teach books or subjects that contain mature subjects. For example, a small group of parents in Brookline filed a serious complaint on a book that was assigned to their children. "The parent complained that “The Glass Castle” included profanity, criticisms of Christianity, and accounts of sexual abuse and prostitution." The parents took the contents of the book personal and wanted it to be banned from the curriculum. Most parents do not consider banning books as a form of censorship when the material goes against their morals and content they think is profane.
