The activity in my mind for Flag Day meet the requirements of Indiana Academic Standard Historical Knowledge 1.1.3. This lesson plan activity starts with reading to the children the book, Betsy Ross by Alexander Wallner. After finishing the reading, discuss with the children about the origin and the reasoning behind the symbolic meaning of our flag. Discuss the flag being created as a symbol to unite our colonies. Furthermore, explain the flag remaining use as a uniting symbol of American being exhibit in places such as ball games, schools, military, and homes. Finally, describe the reason the flag is ultimately a symbol of America. Moreover, Emancipation Day is ideal for another third-grade English lesson plan. This Emancipation Day lesson plan falls underneath the Indiana Academic Standard 3.RL.2.3. The computer lab is required for this lesson plan activity. Pass a compare and contrast worksheet and a blank piece of scrap paper around to students. Explain to students to fold the scrap paper hotdog style and label Puerto Rico and United States on opposite sides of the creases. With the use of the internet haves students research the predominant languages, ethnicities, sports, music, and traditions in Puerto Rico and the United Sates. Then students are to fill out compare and contrast with the information researched to provide the similarities and differences between the United States and Puerto Rico. Students rarely receive information about the American citizens not within the confines of our mainland. Therefore, Emancipation Day is a perfect opportunity to engaged students in understanding the culture of Puerto Rican American
