Leann King The Spanish and Hernan Cortes are very important throughout history. Conquering the Aztecs was very important to Cortes, who was captain. Him and his soldiers planned and landed in Mexico in 1519; with 550 men, sixteen horses, and ten cannon. Hernan Cortes was a soldier in the expedition of Cuba that was led by Diego Vasquez and then later they sent him to Mexico and they were searching for fame, adventure, gold, and a new territory for Spain. Religion was a significant role during the conquest for both the emperor of the Aztec empire, Montezuma and Cortes. The Aztecs at this time were expecting the return of an ancient God to arrive from the east as Cortes arrived. The Spanish were immensely outnumbered; however, they succeeded in conquering the Aztecs in less than two years. Bernal Diaz was one of Hernan Cortez faithful soldiers and he wrote as they explored through Mexico. First, Bernal Diaz mentions Juan de Grijalva returned from Cuba, and then Governor Diego Velasquez understood that there were lands that were rich. On February 10, 1519 they heard mass again in a different location and then set sail with nine other ships. No matter what they did or where they went, Hernan Cortes always managed to attend mass wherever their location was at. The Tlascala formed an alliance with the Spanish to help against the Aztecs and Cortes tried to turn them to Christianity, like he did with all the Indian people he conquered.
