Okonkwo had many life events that changed his personality through the chapters of the story. One major life event that changed Okonkwo was his father. Okonkwo never wanted to be like his father. “Unoka, the grown-up, was a failure. He was poor and his wife and children had barely enough to eat. People laughed at him because he was a loafer, and they swore never to lend him any more money because he never paid back.” (page 4). This was who his father was. He never owned up to anything. He would always say that he was going to pay people back but never did. He died owing people large amounts of money. This drove him to make an effort to not be anything like his father, because people in the village didn't like him as a person.
Another thing that changed Okonkwo that reflected his behavior was society. Okonkwo was the kind of person who did not want people to view him as weak, or feminine. He works …show more content…
“Then they came to the tree from which Okonkwo's body was dangling, and they stopped dead.” Okonkwo couldn't handle the new problems that life had to offer with the British coming in. Okonkwo wasn't the type of man to let things go. He would hold a grudge against anyone and anything if they did him wrong or ruined his way of living. This of which, the British did. The reason he committed suicide is because Umuofia did not support him. This made Okonkwo come to the realization that they will not be going to war. Which leads him to kill
