Today in the 17th century, Amsterdam is the economic and social capital of the world. People immigrate to the Netherlands to seek jobs with better conditions. Therefore, the urban population increases as well as the working class is getting larger. Different culture, religion, skills, ideas, goods and people all come together in the Netherlands.
During the 15th century, Antwerp was the social and economic center of the Spanish Netherlands. But when Antwerp was taken over by the Spanish in 1585, many people fled to the northern provinces. Many of them were rich and educated, therefore they brought knowledge to many cities such as Amsterdam, Leiden and Delft. The cities offered work space, free housing, citizenship and financial support for businesses for the refugees. Also many people come to express new ideas that are not accepted in other places because Netherlands did not limit freedom to express ideas. An English physician and philosopher named John Locke came to the Netherlands to express his idea against monarchy. His idea was not accepted in England so he came to the Netherlands. Also the printing technique have been developed his idea could be spread quicker through printing.
