As a result of the revolutionary war, America felt the need to advocate agriculture for the sake of domestic growth. The North and South did not agree in the direction of economic development that they wanted for the country. The North, especially Alexander Hamilton, supported the development toward an industry-based economy with the center focus on urban growth. However, the Anti-Federalists imagined an agricultural society with a large slave population. It was not until Jefferson became the president, that the Republican Party backed up agricultural development instead of commercial development. After the war, American trade blossomed in the sense that it freed itself from trade restrictions and tariffs that Britain required of America. However, another change in economy that happened during this time, was the postwar depression. In addition to mentioning the faultiness of the Articles of Confederation, rebellion’s from those who demand paper currency and an equal distribution of land, created Shay’s Rebellion. This, was where farmers demanded tax relief, paper money, and in general, relief from their indebtedness. Fighting the war was extremely costly. A huge amount of debt that America was accumulating at that time, could not be paid off because Congress lacked the power to tax. Many farmers were dragged into debt and had their land taken away because most did not have enough money to pay the government and were taxed heavily.
