The observation was conducted on a Saturday afternoon from 3pm to 6pm. The time frame selected for the observation was due to the peak hour of the business in the restaurant. Hence, within the selected hours of observation, it was expected to observe and compile sufficient behaviors which are later classified and clustered into several themes. The layout of the restaurant is attached in the appendix.
Subjects
The focus of study was directed to participants who were 12 years and above. Children were not the focus of the study as not many them dine in the restaurant. No special characteristics were observed for this study.
Procedures
The old town kopitiam had tables both in and outside the restaurant. However, the tables provided outside of the restaurant were only a few. Therefore, I chose to sit inside the restaurant, to get a full view in the restaurant, thus to ease my observation. To avoid suspicion on me, I pretended to be one of the customers in the restaurant by ordering a drink. I also kept myself busy with a book so that people will not suspect me for being in a restaurant for a long hour. The observed behaviors were recorded in a note form.
