Nutrition’s Role in the Flynn Effect and Socially Accepted Substance Abuse Better nutrition and the Flynn Effect have a strong correlation, but first you must understand what the Flynn Effect is. “The Flynn Effect is the substantial and long-sustained increase in both fluid and crystallized intelligence test scores measured in many parts of the world…” (Lynn). Specifically, some socially accepted abuse of substances includes alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, and diet pills. These substances have become a part of the norm in society and nothing is really said against it. Alcohol is used casually, but also in excess. There are a select few who are against alcohol, but in general society views drinking as fun and a way to attract more friends. What they don’t see is the person lying in a hospital bed with a liver that is dying because of their drinking habits or the countless deaths caused by drunk drivers. There are so many commercials for diet pills and weight loss programs and it has a huge affect on the minds of those watching, especially young girls. They are pressured into being “perfect” and they take diet pills to try to achieve that. When they see all of the models on the magazine and they have a figure that is nearly impossible to achieve, they develop a low self-esteem and seek a way to get that perfect body. That is exactly what the media caters to. Many people become addicted to them and think that they have to have them or they will not be beautiful anymore. That is not true and the world has begun to embrace different body types, but it will take awhile if it ever fully
